This month’s Kansas City Designer Spotlight is RootedKC. Design duo Lanie and Brent share with us how they got their start, their design must-haves, and who’s designs they swoon over.

How did you get started in design?

Brent and I started by flipping homes together in 2010.  Shortly there after, people started reaching out to us through our social media channels for help on their personal homes.

What’s your favorite room to design?

When given the opportunity to really be creative, every room is our favorite to design.  But, if I had to pick, it’d probably be living rooms.

Do you like to remodel or do you prefer new build?

Remodels have a special place in our heart! It’s so fun to give an old home new life!

What are your favorite things to shop for the home?

Now this is a tough one! Old rugs and accessories

Where do you look for home inspirations? (Design magazines, blogs, Pinterest)

We of course find inspiration via magazines, blogs and Pinterest but we also find a lot of inspiration through exploring other homes, cool restaurants, hotels, and travel.

Are there architectural styles that influence your work?

We find beauty in so many different types of architectural styles.  For our personal home though, we are embracing the exterior and going with a mix of English cottage and new traditional.

What are your project must-haves?

An open mind and good communication.

What is your ideal client?

A dream client is one that isn’t afraid to take a few risks while also trusting the process from start to finish!

What is your favorite thing about your home?

The fact that I’ve been able to convince Brent to not sell it! We just hit a record 3 years and are just starting to renovate.

What’s your favorite stone?

We are both huge fans of the Eternal Charcoal Soapstone in the suede finish by Silestone! Classic enough for me and manly enough for Brent!

Who is your favorite local artist?

Shout out to Sarah with White Wood Canvas! Her artwork is so lovely and we’re so excited to have one of her pieces in our entry soon.

Who is your Interior Designer crush?

I have two- Amber Lewis and Jessica Helgerson.

What’s your favorite thing about Rocktops?
